Who’s up for some Pi?

Ok.. It’s not that kind of Pi… I’m talking about the latest computer sensation, Raspberry Pi.  If you haven’t heard about them yet, you will.

Raspberry Pi

Raspberry Pi

Raspberry Pi is a computer created by the Raspberry Pi Foundation.  they’re goal is to get these little computers in the hands of kids primarily who might get interested in writing software on them.  And the overall goal is to get kids excited about software so that we’ll have more people able to write the next cutting edge software that all of us will use.  Perhaps the next Mark Zuckerberg or Bill Gates is opening up a Raspberry Pi computer right now.

Now the computer they’re putting out is single chip computer running linux.  It’s about the size of a deck of cards with two USB ports, and ethernet port, HDMI video out,Composite video out, a micro USB port for power, and a SD card as the hard drive.   It also has some pin i/o like the Arduino does to add other peripherals like gps, temperature sensors, photoresistors. Pretty much whatever you can think of I”m sure you could connect it and then program the computer to do something really cool with it.   I ordered one from Element 14′s website and I’m hoping to get it in 3-5 weeks.

Did I mention that the price for the Pi is just $35! Well then I just did!  I’m still thinking what to do with it.  Perhaps I’ll just use it to play with linux and then I’ll buy another one to really do some fun stuff with.  It might be fun to send one into space… or maybe an autonomous robot… or maybe for streaming media like internet radio stations or maybe as a server to have my own internet station!  Or better yet how about a “Pi-Sat” satellite?

I’m not sure what I’ll do with it just yet but for $35 bucks… I’m sure I’ll figure something out.
